Since they aren’t the same as traditional braces, people find themselves asking, “Does Invisalign hurt?”

While aligner discomfort is completely normal, especially when first beginning treatment or switching to a new set, there are a few tricks you can use to help lessen the tenderness. To help keep your smile on track, here are five tips to help you feel better.

1.) Keep Your Clear Aligners In

Invisalign works by applying gentle pressure to your teeth, slowly moving them into the correct alignment. That pressure may be the cause of the sore feeling, but it’s important to keep the trays in for 20-22 hours a day. While the aligners may feel uncomfortable at first, taking them out too often can delay the process and make it harder for your mouth to adjust to them. So, when you think about removing the clear aligners, remember that the tenderness means they are working!

2.) Drink Cold Water

To help ease the transition with the trays, you can drink some cold water to help soothe your mouth. Applying a cold compress to your cheek for about 10-minute intervals can provide the same relief if your teeth are sensitive.

3.) Use Orthodontic Wax

Sometimes, the edges of the Invisalign trays may be slightly rough and irritate your gums or tongue. Orthodontic wax can create a barrier over the edges, making them more comfortable. You simply roll up a small piece of wax between your fingers and gently mold it against the areas causing discomfort.

If you are having consistent issues with your aligners, it’s worth talking about it with your dentist. It doesn’t hurt to have them double-check the fit and ensure they are as comfortable as possible.

4.) Stick With Soft Foods at First

Sore teeth when you first start Invisalign or switch to a new set of trays can make it harder to enjoy crunchy snacks or chewy meals. It’s recommended to eat softer foods as you are adjusting to the new aligners. Smoothies, yogurt, eggs, and mashed potatoes are options that don’t require a lot of chewing, so your mouth can have a little break. Remember that it’s only until you become adjusted to Invisalign! In a short while, you can go back to your regular diet.

5.) Take Pain Relievers

A little extra help from over-the-counter medications can help tackle some discomfort that you’re feeling. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label and talk to your dentist if you have any concerns about your aligners.

Although having Invisalign can be uncomfortable at first, you’ll get used to it in no time! By following these tips and talking with your dentist, you can have a smooth journey with clear aligners. In the end, you may look back on the discomfort and think it was nothing compared to having a straighter, healthier smile.

About the Practice

At MJM Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, you benefit from a dentist duo that utilizes state-of-the-art dental technology, so your treatments are as effective and comfortable as possible. Dr. Malcolm Murray and Dr. Ahmed Saadoon are certified in Invisalign Clear Aligners, meaning they have the expertise to provide you with completely customized treatments.
