Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Dr. Murray understands many patients delay or even cancel dental visits because of anxiety; some can’t tolerate the sounds, smell, or the environment in the dentist office. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Murray can provide sedation alongside treatment to help patients feel calm and relaxed throughout the procedure.

Do I need sedation dentistry?

If you feel fearful or anxious about visiting the dentist, sedation dentistry might be right for you. Good candidates for sedation include those who:

  • Can’t sleep the night before a dental visit
  • Have moderate to severe anxiety about upcoming dental visits
  • Have difficulty relaxing in the dentist’s chair
  • Are fearful of injections or drilling
  • Are extremely sensitive to pain
  • Often cancel or postpone dental treatment because of anxiety

How does sedation dentistry work?

Dr. Murray offers two types of sedation: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Both methods provide several benefits to patients who have a difficult time relaxing.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is a popular option for many patients who struggle with mild to moderate anxiety or fear. Dr. Murray administers the gas through a nasal mask, and patients feel relaxed almost immediately. Nitrous oxide wears off fairly quickly, so patients can get back to their routine right away.

Oral conscious sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking anti-anxiety medication before arrival. Patients who tend to be severely anxious find this method to be most useful for keeping them calm, comfortable, and relaxed throughout the appointment. The effects last for several hours so you will need someone to drive you to and from the office.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry helps patients manage anxiety and fear associated with dental visits. Benefits include:

  • An easy-to-stick-to recommended plan
  • More comfortable dental visits
  • Little to no pain and discomfort during dental visits
  • No side effects with nitrous oxide
  • Little to no side effects with oral sedation
