Practicing proper preventive care, like brushing and flossing twice daily, can help you avoid many common dental concerns that contribute to emergencies, like cavities, gum disease, and injuries. However, there’s no way to predict when an unexpected problem might occur.

For example, if you’re traveling abroad this summer, you might develop a toothache or other concerns requiring immediate attention. Continue reading to learn 3 helpful tips that can help you handle dental emergencies when you’re far from home!

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

Summer is an ideal time to plan a trip to a faraway place, and it can be incredibly exciting to put together a travel itinerary for your new adventure. But don’t forget to consider your dental health!

You likely already know where you are going and how long you will be there, and thanks to current technology, it’s not difficult to research potential dentists ahead of time and know how to locate one at your destination. You might even be able to find an appropriate provider through your insurance policy, if you carry one. You may also want to verify whether your plan includes overseas coverage and if there are other restrictions to be aware of, like a deductible or waiting period that must be met before benefits kick in.

Tip #2: Get a Checkup Before You Leave

When it comes to dental emergencies, a good defense is the best offense. Most oral dilemmas don’t resolve themselves and usually get progressively worse, but scheduling a checkup and cleaning before you leave home can strengthen your smile and prevent possible issues.

Your dentist will examine your mouth for tooth decay, periodontal problems, or other damage, and provide appropriate treatments to address them. Whether you need a fluoride treatment to mineralize your enamel, a tooth-colored filling, or gum disease treatment, they can help shield your grin from additional harm. Plus, you’ll enjoy some much-needed peace of mind while you’re away knowing your smile is healthy.

Tip #3: Pack an Emergency Kit

Unfortunately, it’s also possible to experience a dental emergency at the airport or on a plane, and you wouldn’t want to be in a position where you’re hurting and can’t get help. Carrying a small dental kit in your carry-on baggage ensures that you’ll have everything you need if you develop a toothache or have some other issue.

Keep in mind that most airport security won’t allow any liquids, gels, or aerosols in containers more than 3.4 ounces, so you might not want to include a bottle of water, for example. However, you can bring a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss, as well as pain medications like Tylenol, ibuprofen, and numbing oral gels.

Taking a few simple precautions can safeguard your smile so you can feel free to make the most of your time away from home!
