What are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are a type of complex dental restoration that is designed to attach to dental implants, keeping them fixed in place. This makes them distinctive from traditional dentures, which only rely on the natural suction of the gums and shape of the mouth to keep stable.

With that said, there are multiple types of implant dentures to consider as part of your tooth replacement. This includes fixed implant dentures and removable ones, both of which have their own unique benefits.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures are generally easier to live with because you don’t have to worry about removing them to keep them clean. However, only a dentist can properly remove them. That means you will need to pay special attention to your oral hygiene at home to ensure residual food and plaque do not collect on your restoration.

Removable Implant Dentures

If you prefer the freedom of being able to take out your denture for regular cleaning, similar to that of a traditional denture, it can be customized for easy removability. You’ll just need to be extra careful with it to avoid potential drops or damage.

The Implant Denture Procedure

To place your denture, you first need to have four to six dental implants placed throughout your jaw. Ahead of surgery, our office will make sure there is enough bone tissue for the implants to integrate properly. If this is the case, we’ll schedule you for surgery. During treatment, small incisions are made in the gum tissue and tiny holes are created for the implants to sit in. After the implants have fused with the bone, you’ll come back to have the abutments placed, then an impression will be created. This impression is used to fabricate your denture.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

If you are missing most or all of your teeth, chances are you are eligible for implant dentures. However, patients should also have:

• Decent overall health
• Healthy gum tissue
• Substantial bone tissue
